Get your fishing rods, lines and bait ready for the 10th annual Vamos A Pescar Let’s Go Fishing kids and family fishing event Saturday at Buddy Holly Park, 2525 N. University Ave.
Los Hermanos Familia encourages families to be one with nature, to take in conversation with friends and enjoy a beautiful lake during the event that begins at 6 a.m. and lasts into the afternoon, said Christy Martinez-Garcia, an organizer with non-profit organization.
She said the annual event is a great opportunity to let kids learn a new skill, with a chance to practice fishing with no license needed for area youth.
Martinez-Garcia said it’s a last hurrah for children before many begin or go back to school the following week.
“It’s a wonderful place to be on a Saturday morning before going back to school,” she said. ”(Los Hermanos Familia) sustained the same message of bringing families together. We’re not going to see our kids as much.”
Aaron Sims, a Texas Game Warden and public information officer for the Lubbock district, said the Texas Game Warden Association helps fund fishing events like Vamos A Pescar to allow the community to fish.
“Anyone under 17 doesn’t need their fishing license,” he said. “It’s a great time for us to share our enthusiasm for fishing along with the kids. It’s so enjoyable to see them catch their first fish and take pictures.”
Los Hermanos Familia will honor military and veterans during the annual fishing event this year, including some World War II veterans expected to be in attendance.
Ahead of the event, volunteers will help Los Hermanos Familia pick up trash and debris around the lake, with a clean-up event at 6 p.m. Tuesday before the lake is stocked with fish later in the week.
“We have a hatchery from Oklahoma that’s bringing in the fish,” said Martinez-Garcia.
Although basic bait and fishing poles will be provided, she said people from the community are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles.
Sims said this will be the last fishing event for the summer, calling it a great way to continue getting children to fish to pass the skill down to future generations.
